EPA Youth Arts & Music Center Kicks Off Architect Selection

Deborah Frieden, acting on behalf of the EPA Youth Arts & Music Center LLC., kicked off an an architect selection process in August 2015 following the acquisition of a large site at the corner of Bay and Pulgas Streets. The process is an invitational RFQ with 22 firms invited to participate. The goal of the process is to select a firm that can lead an extensive community design process involving community stakeholders as well as local youth from the Youth Action Team that will result in a creative, youth-centric facility that is appropriate in its context and unique to EPA. Keynote Speaker for Burning Man Global Leadership Conference

Deborah has been invited to speak as one of the keynote speakers at the Global Leadership Conference for Burning Man on April 10, 2015. The Conference theme is “The Next Creative Renaissance: Buildin’ it up, Bustin’ it Out, and Bringin’ it Home” aimed at inspiring civic engagement through art and community. The event will be attended by more than 400 members of the Burning Man Global Community from 25 countries. This year’s conference theme is “The Next Creative Renaissance: Buildin’ it up, Bustin’ it Out, and Bringin’ it Home” aimed at inspiring civic engagement through art and community. Deborah will speak on “Arts as Community Catalysts.”

MCA Chicago Announces Building Project & New Brand

As noted in the following article, the MCA Chicago selected Johnston Marklee to develop a master plan for the museum as well as to relocate and renovate their restaurant while creating a new public engagement zones. Deborah Frieden advised the MCA on their architect selection process, sat on the selection committee, and advised on the master planning and renovation project collaborating with local project manager, Elizabeth Miller of Studio 31. Currently, Deborah is assisting MCA in planning a new Engagement Zone for public programs, social activities and educational arts activities including artist-driven projects.

Creative Placemaking: Connecting Community Development and the Arts

The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and the National Endowment for the Arts hosted a symposium at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on January 14, 2015. The Journal prepared for the conference included an article by Mayor Ed Lee and San Francisco Arts Commission Director, Tom DeCaigny. Deborah Frieden provided advice and commentary on the article.

Article for Plan Charlotte N.C. – Deborah Frieden Interviewed as Source

Plan Charlotte is a project of the UNC Charlotte’s Urban Institute, an applied research center at UNC Charlotte with a goal to be a resource for exploring problems and finding solutions to urban issues. Plan Charlotte published an article on a potential arts district in Cornelius. Deborah was interviewed as a source for the article. The article appeared August 12, 2014 written by Rachel Prude. WMA Conference “Playing the Numbers: Learning New Rules of Museum Finance”

Deborah will be speaking at the Western Museum Association meeting this fall on the financial aspects of capital project planning. Marjorie Schwarzer, Museum Studies Professor at University of San Francisco organized the panel and will moderate.

Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

Deborah Frieden has been hired by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago to assist them in planning for a re-envisioning of some of their facilities with an emphasis on increasing audience engagement. The project will include a completely new restaurant experience with street level access combined with a new entry and engagement sequence connected to the theater, restaurant and gathering space. Further, it will include master planning other needs for education space, public areas and new interactive engagement spaces.

Vancouver Art Gallery Short-List for Design Architects

Today, the Vancouver Art Gallery announced their short-list of firms to undertake the design of the new Gallery project – a 300,000 s.f. new facility in downtown Vancouver.

Deborah Frieden is the Gallery’s advisor on the architect selection process and led the Technical Review Panel’s evaluation. Deborah has been consulting for the Gallery over the last six years on a range of planning issues starting with site evaluation and program development, as well as general advising, assisting the Gallery in preparing for its future.

Watts Innovation Zone Planning Charette

Deborah participated in the Watts Innovation Zone Planning Charette in October with colleagues from around the country: India Lee from the Cleveland Foundation, Damon Rich, Urban Designer for the City of Newark, Maurice Cox, Director of the Tulane City Center, Cathy S.C. Jones, real estate developer from Birmingham, and Renee Kemp-Rotan, Director of Cultural Capital Projects for the City of Birmingham. The charette was organized and facilitated by Steve Lewis from Los Angeles in consultation with and on behalf of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee.

Arkansas Art Center

Deborah Frieden & Associates has been engaged by the Arkansas Art Center to help facilitate a strategic planning process addressing its long-term facilities needs among other issues. The Arkansas Art Center is one of the 2 top art museums in Arkansas and the only major museum in Little Rock. Associating with Deborah is Marjorie Schwarzer, professor of museum studies at University of San Francisco, frequent lecturer and the author of the definitive book on the history of museums in America.
